Project Overview
In early 2024, ABOD was approached to craft a visual identity for Rasik, an initiative dedicated to curating and presenting classical Indian dance in its traditional forms while integrating those forms into broader cultural landscapes.
What intrigued us most was not merely the task of visual design, but the opportunity to give form to something that lived between movement and meaning.
At its heart, Rasik is about essence. Not just the dance itself, but the experience of receiving dance, the emotional resonance, the history, and the subtle conversation between performer and audience. In Sanskrit, a rasik is someone who savours rasa, mood, sentiment, essence, an idea that carries centuries of cultural weight. Our work began not with shapes or letters, but with gesture and meaning.

The challenge
This project posed a dual challenge. To translate an abstract cultural concept into a mark that feels immediate and enduring and to do so with sensitivity to the deep traditions of classical Indian dance.
A rasik is defined by appreciation, an internal experience as much as an external one. The task was not to ornament, but to distill.

Our Approach
The process unfolded through stages of reflection, exploration, and refinement -
Listening to context — understanding Rasik beyond its name, as an idea rooted in sentiment and historical practice.
Exploring metaphor — considering how the essence of appreciation might be embodied visually.
Sketching with intent — moving from loose lines towards structured forms.
Balancing form and meaning — refining the visual elements into shapes that carry both gesture and clarity.
Our approach remained narrative-led rather than purely stylistic, honouring cultural nuance and intuitive interpretation.

What We Explored
Finding the Visual Language
Initial ideas began with typography, imagining the name “RASIK” as a fluid, expressive form. But this felt limited. It did not capture the depth of experience the word implies.
We pivoted to symbolism.
In Sanskrit aesthetics, rasa can mean flavour, emotion, or essence. This led to a metaphor: a bee gathering nectar, an embodiment of collection, movement, and sensitivity.
What if the logo could emerge from gesture itself?

Gesture as Form
We drew inspiration from mudras, classical hand gestures used in Indian dance to convey meaning through motion. Two particular gestures, Bhramara mudra symbolising a bee, and Padma or Alapadma mudra symbolising a flower, became central to the exploration.
Early sketches were delicate and lyrical, but lacked presence.
The breakthrough came when we shifted from outlines to solid forms, allowing positive and negative space to define movement and balance. Carefully considered contrast and background gave the symbol rhythm and clarity, echoing the traditions Rasik represents.
